What is Myofunctional Therapy?
You can think of myofunctional therapy as physical therapy for the face and mouth. We guide our clients through targeted exercises to improve the way the muscles in the mouth, face, and tongue work together.
Did you know the tongue is important for all of our basic functions— including eating, sleeping, digestion, and speech?
That’s why myofunctional therapy looks at the big picture to address the root cause of breathing, eating, sleeping, and speech problems… all at once.
How Does Myofunctional Therapy Work?
The underlying causes of poor eating habits, unhealthy sleep patterns, and unclear speech are often overlooked, but they are all directly tied to how the tongue works. When someone experiences weakness in the tongue muscles, coordination difficulties, or improper resting positions, they often compensate in ways that can lead to other problems over time.
At Oakland Myo and Wellness Institute, we focus on improving our clients’ life-long health outcomes through simple and fun exercises. You will notice drastic improvement in how you feel and function from your first week of therapy!
Myofunctional Therapy for Breathing
Do you struggle to take deep breaths, speak at a high volume, or talk for a long time? Or perhaps you experience symptoms such as cold fingers and toes, dizziness, lightheadedness, anxiety, heart palpitations, and poor sleep quality?
The good news is that these symptoms can be addressed with specialized breathing exercises. Through a combination of breathing exercises, yoga pranayama, and the Buteyko Breathing Method, we’ll help you:
Take larger breaths
Increase breath support for talking and physical activity
Improve overall circulation
Improve sleep quality and reduce sleep apnea
Reduce allergies and asthma symptoms
Feel calmer and more clear-headed overall
Increase overall awareness of breath
Myofunctional Therapy for Tongue Ties
Myofunctional therapy optimizes the outcomes of a tongue tie release— especially when exercises are completed before and after the procedure.
Our therapists will guide you through fun (and sometimes funny!) exercises to tone the muscles of the jaw, lips, cheeks, and tongue and get you ready for your tongue-tie release.
After the procedure, your tongue will have the range of motion it needs to move properly for eating, swallowing, and speaking.
Myofunctional Therapy for Finger & Thumb Sucking
Oakland Myo and Wellness Institute has a 100% success rate in graduating clients from their thumb or finger sucking in 20 days or less!
We know how incredibly difficult it can be to stop a habit, so we use science and psychology to make it happen.
Our process is fun, playful, and stress-free. Your child will be motivated to participate and engage in daily celebrations of their hard work.
Your whole family is welcome to join in and be a part of therapy. You’ll walk away from sessions feeling confident about how to make each day a success.
Speech Therapy
At Oakland Myo & Wellness Institute, we treat speech sound disorders through a myofunctional therapy lens— meaning that we go beyond traditional speech therapy methods to train the specific muscles used in speech.
Our speech therapy sessions are especially effective in treating articulation disorders, lisps, and residual sound errors int adulthood.
If you’ve hit a wall and are frustrated with traditional speech therapy, we will determine why certain sounds are hard to make and fix the problem— which is often an underlying myofunctional disorder. You’ll see quick progress and speak with confidence!
Feeding Therapy
Whether your child is struggling with a suspected tongue tie or trying to overcome picky eating, our multi-disciplinary team will dig until we find the root of their feeding problems.
Once we pinpoint the cause of your child’s feeding challenges, we’ll address them through a combination of evidence-based therapy methods. We will also make referrals and point you to other trusted professionals in the area to ensure that your child achieves the best outcomes in feeding therapy.
Together, we’ll restore the peace of mealtimes and make eating a positive, stress-free experience.
Occupational & Physical Therapy
At Oakland Myo & Wellness Institute, our occupational and physical therapy services address aches while improving the way the brain and body work together.
We’ll guide you through making simple adjustments to how you complete daily activities like sitting in your chair at work or driving. Our exercises are proven to reduce pain, promote flexibility, and maintain strength as clients age.
For children, therapy will focus on developing everyday skills to foster independence, self-care, and relationships— like brushing teeth, coloring, writing, or playing with friends. We also support mobility, muscle strength, endurance, balance, and coordination while moving through obstacle courses, playing games, exploring sensory bins, or racing scooters.
No matter what our clients’ goals are, we’re committed to making the process fun! All clients receive tailored exercises that allow them to use their bodies better throughout their busy days.
